In 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University, by 22 dynamic young women. Their vision was to establish a sisterhood with the purpose of providing public service to their surrounding communities. Their passion ignited a flame, and now, there are over 900 chapters in the USA and in various countries around the world. The Denver Alumnae Chapter is proud to be a part of this legacy.
During this upcoming year, we’ll be celebrating 70 years of service to the Denver Metropolitan area. Miles and miles from any other Delta chapter, three courageous African American women saw the need for social action in Colorado. Mae Adams, a graduate of West Virginia State, Elaine Brown Jenkins, graduate of Ohio State and Jessie Maxwell, graduate of Bishop College, founded the Beta Phi Chapter on February 18, 1939. They quickly grew their membership, inducting Kathryn Cohron, Eleanor Critz, Ruby Cohron Wright, Claudine McCloud and Marion Morrison. Our Charter Members would be proud to see that our Chapter of over 165 members has continued their dedicated support towards programs that are changing Denver and its surrounding communities.
Through Delta Sigma Theta’s Five Point Program Thrust (Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness and Involvement) the Denver Alumnae Chapter has initiated programs such as the Fall ACT Preparation Workshop, Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy (for girls ages 8-13), and Delta GEMS: Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully (for girls ages 14-18), Delta Day at the Capitol and our Sister-to-Sister Breast Cancer Support group designed to help African American woman as breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. During the last three years, our signature Macy’s Fashion Show has raised over $50K towards college scholarships for young African American women. We also know how to have fun, hosting our annual “Step It Up In The Mile High City” Step Show. There, we feature our Mile High Steppers and Delta Divas (50+ year old steppers) along with other Greek Step Teams, representing the Divine Nine of the Pan Hellenic Council. Proceeds from the last several years have benefited the Montbello Girls Basketball Team, Bennie E. Goodwin Foundation, Syrian Temple #49, Denver Kids, and the Sickle Cell Foundation.
Delta women are the catalyst to change in the communities in which they live. We’re the educators, the medical professionals, the political servants, the financial and technical experts, and entrepreneurs that interact with you on a daily basis. We include Mary McCloud Bethune, Dorothy Height, Ruby Dee, Patricia Roberts Harris, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, and Camile Cosby, names you may/may not be familiar with, but have impacted not only Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., but human kind.
Thank you for visiting our Website. Please come back often, as we will continue to have updates on our current programs and initiatives. Join us as we strive to better the lives of those living in the Mile High City.
Sincerely, Michelle Bruton Brown President, Denver Alumnae Chapter
